John W. Maximiuk

John W. Maximiuk, 94, of Indian River, MI, formerly of Farmington, MI, passed away July 2, 2015.  Husband of the late Marie Maximiuk.  Father of Gale Cousins and husband Bill, Gary Maximiuk and wife Kathy, Al Maximiuk and wife Kathy, and son-in-law Bob Scibor.  He was preceded in death by daughter Jan Scibor and two grandchildren.  Loving Grandfather to David, Colleen, Jenny, Brian, Andrew, Kelly, Matt, Courtney and Garrett.  Loving Great Grandfather to Marley.  Brother of Lucille Daniels.  Brother-in-law to Bill and Dolores Turner.

John was born July 1920 in Montreal, Canada and moved to Detroit, MI at a young age.  After graduating from Detroit Northern High School, he proudly served in the Marines in the South Pacific during World War II.  He married Marie Maximiuk in April 1947 at Holy Redeemer Church in Detroit.  The couple made their home in Detroit, later moving to Farmington.

John retired in 1979 after working in the defense administration for many years and in 1980, the couple moved to Indian River where they spent the balance of their retirement.  John volunteered at the Cross in the Woods, Little Traverse Conservancy, and the Cheboygan Opera House. He was also active with the senior centers in Petoskey, Wolverine and Cheboygan.  John possessed a quick wit and a positive attitude which he shared with all. He loved spending time with his family and was proud defender of the USA.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at Cross in the Woods National Shrine, 7078 M-68, Indian River, MI on Saturday, July 11, starting with the family greeting guests and sharing memories from 10:30 am to 12:00, followed by a celebratory mass and concluding with a luncheon at the church.  Father Michael Hanley will officiate.
