I grew up in Royal Oak your mother was my 3rd & 4th grade teacher. I grew up in a violent household and her caring and easy affection were a life-saver for me. She had a way of making each of us feel special. After grad school ( MSU, 1973) I moved to Ann Arbor and started writing, including poetry. I wrote a poem in honor of her and my effort run away to her house in Southfield. It is called: “To Marjorie’s House.”
She called me a few days later and told me she had passed it on to her children saying, “This is why I became a teacher.” I lost track of her as I moved on to Vermont for Several years and then on to San Diego since 1985.
I would be pleased to send the poem on to the family, as well as the portion of my memoir which tells of her importance in my life.
My best to one and all of her family. I carry her in my heart always as one of the most special people to have touched my life. She knew me as Darlene Pauly, and then as Darlene Smith. Several years later I picked out names I really liked and became Nell Rose Smith and changed it legally. Tentative title of the memoirs is: “Cracked Glass, An Imperfectly Perfect Life.”
