Toby Kiisk Obituary

Toivo “Toby” Kiisk, age 87, passed away on Friday, February 2nd. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Beth Kiisk-Milanowski, son-in-law Bob Milanowski, and their 4 children: Emily, Nicholas, Nathan, and Kathryn Milanowski. He is survived by his brother Mati (daughters Shannon & Krista (Jay Glogovsky)) Kiisk, additional 3 grandchildren, Mari Kathryn Gilbert, Rebecca (Tim) Benzenberg, and David (Mindy) Gilbert, 7 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Zachary, Joshua, Logan, Grace, Owen, Reed, and many nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death and reunited once again in Heaven with the love of his life of 65 years Shirley Ann Kiisk, his daughter Kathryn Lynn Gilbert, father Ferdinand Kiisk, mother Elfriede Kiisk, brother Ulo Kiisk, and mother & father in-law Ted and Opal (Bosserdet) Melzo.

Toivo was born March 25, 1936 in Rakvere, Estonia and came to the United States during WWII with his family at the age of 13 as the 100,000th Displaced Person Family to come through Staten Island. Toivo graduated from Saginaw High School in 1954 and attended Delta College before enlisting in the US Navy from 1957-1962. He worked for General Motors for 37 years, and enjoyed serving his community as a member and President of the Shields Lions Club. He was an active member in his Saginaw community calling bingo weekly, ushering at Holy Spirit Parish, and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.  He also drove for the Grand Rapids Trolley Company for weddings and any birthday party, field trip, or school dance his Grandkids requested.

He lived his life by the motto of “eat dessert first,” especially hot fudge sundaes. Known as “Bumpa” to many, Toby loved nothing more than supporting his grandchildren who were the pride & joy of his life. You could find Bumpa on the sidelines of every baseball, football, lacrosse, diving, and hockey game as well as the audience of every musical, dance recital, and choir concert. He proudly showed off “his kids” by dawning their team spirit wear daily - EGR Pioneers, SV Vikings, Michigan Wolverines, Miami of Ohio RedHawks, and TCU Horned Frogs. Bumpa was the “dog whisperer” and spoiled them with a taste of anything he was eating. We know he is welcomed into Heaven by his dogs and granddogs Tinker, Pewter, Hans, ShuShu, Tyler, Mandy, Daisy, Bella & Petunia and will be dearly missed by his granddogs Ella & Blaise.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Toivo’s life on Friday, February 9th from 3-6 PM  at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home (4291 Cascade Rd, Grand Rapids, MI).
