Sheri L. Vander Lugt

Sheri Lynn (Roberts) Vander Lugt, 52, of Ada, Michigan passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, October 23, 2020 after a long, grace-filled battle with ALS. Sheri was born September 17, 1968 in Kalamazoo. After graduating from Kalamazoo Christian High School, she earned a degree in marketing from Western Michigan University. Her first job was in the international marketing department at Amway. After a few years she felt God’s call on her life to become a teacher and attended Calvin College where she earned a second degree in education. After graduating from Calvin, and before starting her teaching career, she and Phil Vander Lugt were married August 9, 1997. She taught two years at Holland Christian Middle School. While there she was awarded the “cool teacher” award. She then pivoted to the cool parent role. Sheri and Phil have 2 sons, Alec (20) and Reed (19). Sheri supported their sons in their studies, was sensitive to their social development, and attentive to their faith formation as they navigated their years at Ada Christian, Grand Rapids Christian High, and currently Calvin University. She was a true soccer mom, never missing an opportunity to see her sons engage in sport activities. She loved the beauty of God’s creation and felt close to God as the family traveled to all fifty states and many national parks. Her favorite week of the year was the week she spent with her family at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds on Lake Michigan.

Central to these experiences in life was Sheri’s interest in apologetics which enabled her to better understand and defend her faith. She experienced God’s faithfulness and in Him she found the necessary strength for her challenging journey. As her time on earth was coming to an end, the anticipation of being at home with Jesus gave her peace. We praise God for her faith and take great comfort that she is in heaven with Jesus.

Sheri is survived by her faithful husband, Phil Vander Lugt and sons, Alec and Reed Vander Lugt; father and mother, David and Leslee Roberts; siblings Beth (Phil) Lawrence and Steve (Pam) Roberts; grandmother Phyllis Smith, all of Kalamazoo; parents-in-law, John and Joanne Vander Lugt (Hudsonville); brother-in-law, Mike (Erin) Vander Lugt (Anchorage); sister-in-law, Sue (Scott) Sikkema (East Grand Rapids); three nieces and seven nephews.

Visitation will be at Ada Bible Church on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. 

A public celebration of Sheri’s life will be held  11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Ada Bible Church, 3869 Knapp St NE Grand Rapids, MI 49525, followed by a luncheon.

Private family interment services will take place at Ada Cemetery
