Richard Ryan Obituary

Richard Morris Ryan, age 86, passed peacefully surrounded by family on November 30, 2022. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Ryan and his wife of 60 years, Julie Ryan. He will be deeply missed by his three daughters Shelley (Mike) Silva, Jan (Steve) Betzer, and Kathy Ryan (Rocky Clancy), 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Growing up at his grandparents’, spending time with family was very important to him. As a teenager he helped at his mother’s flower shop before working on the S.S. Ramona, a steam ship formerly on Reeds Lake. After proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps, he met Julie Kellogg, and the two raised three daughters in East Grand Rapids. Dick retired early and enjoyed traveling with Julie, being with their grandchildren, and spending time in the woods at his favorite place, their cabin near Baldwin on the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette River. Dick will be dearly remembered as a generous, nature-loving, and “teasing but caring” person. A celebration of life will be held 1pm Saturday, December 3, at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A private family burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Foundation.
