Marvin DeWinter Obituary

Marvin Jay DeWinter, age 88, peacefully entered his heavenly home on Monday, January 11, 2021.  The Lord blessed him with a rich, fulfilling life, which he shared with his loving wife for 64 years.

Marvin was one of four children born to Marinus and Lucille DeWinter of Grandville, Michigan. He is survived by his wife Ruth E. DeWinter; children David, Jim, Steve (Naomi) DeWinter, and Lisa (Bradd) Beidler; grandchildren Katherine, Jack, Emily and Steven Beidler; Sachi, Miya and Kimi DeWinter; Christopher (Annie) DeWinter; great-grandchildren Caroline and McClane DeWinter; brother Don (Ruth J.) DeWinter; sister-in-law Betty Wiersma; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin earned his Master of Architecture degree at the University of Michigan, and in the early 60's opened his own architectural firm in Grand Rapids. He played a key role in planning the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids, which began with him restoring the former Pantlind Hotel, and development & design of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in 1980. He also had the honor of being selected to design the Gerald R. Ford Museum. During his 40-year career, he designed many other notable buildings in the Grand Rapids area.

He loved his work, but also had fun skiing, playing golf and tennis, and traveling extensively with his wife and many friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at their cottage on Lake Michigan. Marvin was known for his kindness, generosity, and deep faith in Jesus Christ -- which he considered his greatest gift.

A private family memorial service will be held at LaGrave CRC Church, where he was a member for 50 years. Friends of Marvin are invited to post comments on obits.mlive.com.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of him be made to Indian Trails Camp in Grand Rapids (for campers w/disabilities) or Wedgwood Christian Services.
