Garland Shorter Obituary

Garland Antwan Shorter was born on August 3, 1975 in Dawson, GA. to the late Rev. Cleveland Shorter and Juliette Johnson.  Garland was the fourth of seven children.  He was raised on the Southside of Chicago, where he attended Beasley Academic Center and Lindblom Math & Science Academy. After graduating high School, Garland attended Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan on a baseball scholarship. Garland was raised in St.Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church, in Chicago, where he was baptized at an early age and faithful member of the Angels Choir.

After leaving Grand Valley State, Garland decided to remain in Michigan where he began his work career.  He was a dedicated employee working at Fifth/Third Bank then as a Supervisor for AAA followed by a Department Manager at Allied Business Services.  He gave his all to every job that he held until his health declined.

Garland was a loving son, fun brother, and a dedicated father.  Garland was blessed to enrich the lives of his three beautiful children Derrick (Della) born 11/29/98, Jaiden (April) born 7/20/06 and Diamond (Tiffany) born 1/7/11.  Garland enjoyed spending time with his children, from basketball, fishing, drawing, singing and dancing, or just lounging around the house.

As Garland grew into manhood he still walked with Christ.  About 3 years ago, he began to fellowship with the Brothers of Wednesday Morning Bible Study, 6:30am Keystone Church. He faithfully met with his brothers weekly.

Garland met the love of his life, Naquana Caudle (Nook) in 1995.  Garland and Nook were two peas in a pod.  When Garland went low, Nook went high.  Always having each other’s best interest at heart. Garland and Nook, always brought out the best in each other.  They fought sickness and life like the Dynamic Duo that they were.

Garland was called home to take his rest on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.  Garland was a fighter that fought til the bitter end.  He made the statement “I ain’t going nowhere, I have things to do.”  The things he did, brought a smile to everyone around him and took care of his family.  Garland was always the life of the party. His jokes, his laughter, and his dance moves were just as unique as him.

Garland leaves his precious memories to the love of his life, Naquana; mother, Juliette Johnson of Maryland; 3 children, Derrick, Jaiden, and Diamond; 6 siblings, Bequitha of Georgia, Robert of Washington, Dawn of Georgia, William(Alesha) of Texas, Jillian(Arturo) of Maryland and Portia; 8 nieces; 3 nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

There will be a private family service on Saturday, February 13, 2021 which will be live streamed on the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home website at 1pm.
