Dick Groot

Richard (Dick) Alan Groot, age 68, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 9th, 2023 at his home surrounded by family.

Dick was born in East Grand Rapids, MI on May 21st, 1954 the son of Richard and Thelma (Van Sprang) Groot. He graduated from Creston Christian High School class of 1972. He took over the family business of piano tuning that his late father had left behind. He was a long time Piano Technicians Guild member and one time president of the local chapter. Not only were pianos part of his job, it was clearly a lifelong passion.

Dick was an avid outdoorsman with a deep love of hunting and fishing. Every November, he spent time up north chasing whitetails with his group of guys. Labor Day week ushered in the family tradition of camping at Ludington State Park. With a cigarette in one hand, and a beer in the other, you could find him playing cards with family and friends. 

On April 30th, 1976 he was united in marriage to Marie F. Oosterink who survives. Also surviving are two children, Richard (Emily Schoendorff) Groot of Grand Haven, MI, and Jennifer (Travis) Favreau of Hillsdale, MI; six grandchildren, Timothy, Jack, Hannah, Karstan, Kylan and Emryn; one sister, Cheryl Doornbos of Hudsonville, MI, Sharon (Ronald) Deering,  Denise (Mark) Mollenhauer,  Douglas Oosterink,  Danielle (Timothy) Smith and Bonnie (Len) Null, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Judy Redinger.

The family will receive friends from 4-7p.m. on Monday, May 15th at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home located 4291 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. with a visitation service prior at 10a.m. on Tuesday, May, 16th at Oakhill Evangelical Presbyterian Church, located at 1930 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids, with his pastor, Jeff Carlson officiating.
