Darwin "Jack" Weersing Obituary

Darwin Jacque (Jack), age 92, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully at his home at Porter Hills Village on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 with support from Emmanuel Hospice.

Jack was born in Wyoming Park, MI in December 1929, the youngest son of John and Mary (Kloss) Weersing.  He graduated from Owosso High School class of 1947. He continued to Michigan State University where he studied chemistry for two years before being offered early entry to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.  After graduating in 1953 Jack entered the US Army as a Dental Officer serving in Fulda, Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the University of Michigan and earned a Masters of Science in Orthodontics in 1960.  He then established his orthodontic practice in Grand Rapids where, over the course of 35 years, he created thousands of beautiful smiles for his patients in Western Michigan.

Jack's favorite activity was sailing on Lake Michigan. For many years he was a member of The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club where he was an active racer, competing in the Queens Cup, The Chicago to Mackinac Race and regattas on Lake Macatawa. Jack was a member of Fountain Street Church and found great enjoyment in listening to the pipe organ music. Over the years he was a member of the Michigan Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, US Power Squadron and Rotary Club, and regularly attended Early Risers Breakfast Club of Grand Rapids.  After retirement he could be found on his sailboat in Frankfurt, MI, volunteering for AARP, or attending events of Women's City Club at Sweet House.

Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judith (Hendges), and his two daughters, Susan Secrest of Denver, CO (husband Craig and sons Parker and Tayler), and Sarah Weersing of Auckland, New Zealand (husband Robert Daly and daughter Charlotte). He was preceded in death by his brothers Merrill and Nelson.

A Celebration of Life to remember and honor Jack will be held in the early fall. Memorial contributions can be made to Sweet House Foundation or Fountain Street Church Foundation.
