Phyllis D. Blake age 86, of Grand Haven passed away at home on Sunday Nov. 4, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Blake and her parents Albert and Beth Chapman, granddaughter Brooke Jordan Blake, her uncle Bud and aunt Marian Hoebeke, and cousin Linda Hoebeke Kubial.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Max (Tootie) Blake, Laura Porter, and Ann (Robert) Ploetz, grandchildren, Tiffany (Brien) Fox, Kenneth (Tracy) Porter, Ryan Porter, Robert (Nicole) Blake, Allison Rose Ploetz, and eight great grandchildren. Phyllis grew up with all her first cousins in the Fulton Street Market area of Grand Rapids, they were more like brothers and sisters than cousins. Also surviving are her cousins, Merry Lou Preston, John (Pam) Schwalm, Donna (Jack) Danielson, Judy (Gene) Jankowski, Jim (Sharon) Hoebeke.
Phyllis graduated from Western Michigan University and later received her Masters degree from the University of Michigan. She was a teacher of history at Central High School in Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Community College. She loved her home on the hill in Grand Haven with all of her heart and spending time with her family there. She was a member of the Grand Haven Historical Society and the Garden Club, which she enjoyed very much. Phyllis was a life long member of St John’s Episcopal Church were she served on the flower guild. After her retirement she enjoyed water color painting and the company of her dogs Beau and Violet.
Funeral Services will be held 10am Friday Nov. 9 at St. John’s Episcopal Church 524 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Burial at Lake Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider memorials to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
