After returning to Michigan following college, Jackie worked as Director of Housing at GVSC (now GVSU) and Administrator of Sherbrooke Nursing Home in Grand Rapids, before pursuing her passion for the law and graduating cum laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing. Jackie joined Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett (now Varnum LLP) as an associate in 1986 and became one of the firm’s first female equity partners before eventually retiring in 2005. She briefly came out of retirement to help run Donovan/Scott Law, a firm she opened with her late husband.
Throughout her career, Jackie also served as Co-Chair of the Metro Health Board of Directors, member of the Metro Health Executive Committee, Member of the National Association of Professional Women and Board of Directors member at the Visiting Nurse Association of West Michigan.
In her private life, Jackie was an avid golfer, who enjoyed spending free time with family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Keely Scott, and granddaughter, Makena McDermott, of Denver, CO; and was predeceased by her parents, Duane and Doris Fredell, and her younger brothers, Charlie and Terry Fredell, as well as her husband, Mike Donovan.
A graveside service was held with immediate family and friends at the family’s plot in Reed City, Michigan on May 14th. Memorial donations may be made to the Metro Health Foundation (or the charity of your choice), as the hospital was an important part of her life and they took excellent care of her in her final days.
