George Harold Hellar, age 68, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully under Hospice Care on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 surrounded by his family who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. George was born on June 19, 1951 in Detroit, MI, the son of Harold Warren William Hellar and Lillian Beryl. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Diane Hellar; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jack Windiate, Gale Phipps, Gerald and Dixie Phipps and Janice Graves. Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Cheryl Hellar; his daughter, Rebecca (Brian) Bowden; two step-daughters, Brandy (Ken Decker) Hochkins and Jamie (Darnell) Dorsey; his grandchildren, Bryon Hochkins, Dominick Dorsey, Alanna Dorsey. Also surviving are his siblings, Albert Warren Hellar, Lance William (Mary) Hellar, Gregory John Hellar, Patricia Jean (Scott) Pillsbury; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Delberta Windiate, Kitty Phipps, Ethel (Rob) Palmer, Tony Graves, Alex (Deb) Phipps, Craig (Diane) Phipps, Geneva (John) Dean, Valerie Green and many nieces and nephews. George, a member of local #845, worked for over 40 years as a commercial painter. He was an avid out-doors-man who enjoyed golf, and fishing and he was a die-hard Detroit Lions fan. Always up for a new adventure, he and his wife, loved to travel both in the United States and overseas. George was a gifted guitar player who enjoyed singing around a campfire or at family events. He and his wife were members of Cascade Fellowship Christian Reformed Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm on Sunday at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Chapel where funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. Memorial Contributions in George’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
