Dorothy Lamina Jones

Dorothy Jones, age 101, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Clark Retirement Home.  Dorothy was born in Big Rapids and moved to Sparta in 1922. She graduated from Sparta High School in 1935 and then earned her Associates Degree from Davenport Institute (University) in 1935. Upon graduation, Dorothy worked for Consumers Power Company.  She met Charles at a young adult group at First Methodist Church in 1941, and they were married there on October 27, 1944. Charles and Dorothy were lifelong members of East Congregational Church, joining in 1949.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Gladys Sack and her husband, Charles of 43 years.  Dorothy is survived by her sons Gordon (Harriett), Jeff (Mary) and Paul (Diane), six grandchildren (Michelle, Michael, Eric, Stacey, Mieke and Allison) and three great grandchildren (Claire, Garrett and Theo).  Dorothy was a loyal volunteer, both at the boys’ schools, in the community and at church.  She served as a Cub Scouts Den mother and on the Ottawa and Alexander PTA School Boards. She was also a long-time member of the Pilgrim Manor Guild.  Dorothy loyally volunteered her time at church well into her nineties: Choir Mothers Board; Chancel Choir member; charter member of the Klise Guild; Thrifty Pilgrim store; church office; Devotional Life Board; Board of Trustees member and Financial Committee; Memorial Committee; and Sunday School teacher and secretary.  Dorothy enjoyed travel, all types of stitching, and was a loyal University of Michigan sports fan (Go Blue!), in honor of her sons who are all alums. She treasured family time above all: the Sack family reunions, her years spent at Higgins Lake, weekly Sunday dinners she cooked for everyone, and renting cottages on Lake Michigan to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her years at Clark, where she was able to remain in her Independent Living townhouse until 99-1/2 years old!  A memorial service will be held at East Congregational Church, 1005 Giddings SE, on Wednesday, June 19 at 11:00a.m., with Reverend Ruth Fitzgerald and Reverend David Wheeler officiating.  A visitation will take place one hour before the service.   In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Hospice of Michigan, 989 Spaulding SE, Ada, MI 49301, www.hom.org.
