Craig Alguire Obituary

Craig Thomas Alguire, M.D., age 42, passed away at home on October 11th, 2019 surrounded by his family following a four-year struggle with brain cancer. Craig inspired others with the way he met the challenge of his terminal diagnosis the same way he lived his short but rich life—with dignity, poise, and an amazing sense of humor.

Craig was born in Grand Haven, Michigan on October 22, 1976 to Mary Kay and Thomas Alguire, M.D.  Being the youngest of three children, and the only boy, Craig enjoyed “youngest child” status from the beginning. Craig had a deep connection with his parents and his sisters. Anyone who was around him could see how much he loved and respected them.

Craig married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Staci Constant, in Grand Haven in June of  2001. His greatest joy were his four children Allison (14), Connor (11), Ella (10), and Mia (6). Craig was indescribably proud of them. Nothing made him happier than watching them excel in academics, the arts and sports.

Craig graduated with honors from Grand Haven Senior High School in 1995.  He enjoyed participating in band, and he also played on the varsity soccer team and was captain of the swim team. An accomplished swimmer, he earned All-American honors as a member of two qualifying relay teams. Craig was a gifted natural athlete.  In addition to being an All-American swimmer, he regularly competed in triathlons, 5ks and the Reeds Lake Triathlon. Craig was also an avid reader. He could usually be found with a book in his hand or ear buds in his ears listening to a book or podcast.

A true Spartan, Craig proudly attended Michigan State University, graduating with honors from MSU’s Lyman-Briggs science college in 1999.  Craig graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2003. He stayed on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, where he was selected for the great honor of chief resident. After completing his cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan, he and his wife Staci moved to East Grand Rapids, where Craig joined a cardiology practice that became part of Spectrum Health. Craig’s vast knowledge of cardiology and his easy demeanor quickly earned him the respect of his patients and colleagues.

Craig is survived by his wife, Staci Alguire, their children, Allison, Connor, Ella, and Mia; his parents, Mary Kay and Tom Alguire; in-laws Gail and Gary Constant; sisters Amy Ackerman (John) and Katie Alguire (Brad Springer); brother-in-law Chad Constant (Kimberly); nieces Anna Ackerman, Kathryn Ackerman, Grace Ackerman, Mary Violet Springer, Rosalee Springer, Genevieve Springer, Kendall Constant, Sydney Kate Constant and nephews; Carson and Palmer Constant; uncles James Alguire, Patrick Alguire (Barb Mathes), and David Bloss (Susan) and many other friends and family whom he loved and respected.

Craig will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. A celebration of Craig’s life will be held on Sunday, October 20th at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids from 12 to 4pm, with visitation from 12-1:30, service from 1:30-2:30 and refreshments to follow.   All are welcome.
