Betsy Jolstad Welch passed away peacefully on June 29th, one month short of her 99th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Montgomery Welch, and her parents, Sigrid and Trygve Jolstad. She is survived by her five children, Kenneth C. (Cynthia) Welch, Montgomery J. (Lucy) Welch, Andrew M. (Mary) Welch, Jonathan A. (Judy) Welch and Kristin M. Welch; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Betsy was born in Detroit and attended Liggett School, where she was crowned May Queen, and Smith College. She was a long time member of the Grand Rapids Art Museum and was always artistically inclined. Initially she concentrated on pottery and ceramics, but found her real love when she discovered painting with watercolors. Her house on Reeds Lake was decorated with many framed examples of her wonderful work.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Clark on Keller Lake and Hospice of Michigan for the care Betsy received during her last days.
In accordance with her request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal services. The family will be celebrating her life in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan and Hospice of Michigan.
