James Postma Obituary

On June 13, 2022 James Roger Postma, age 79, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus and Margaret Postma, and his brothers Carl Postma and Don Postma and brother-in-law and sister-n-law Wayne and Merry (Hoover) Bass.

Jim was born on January 31, 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Jim was surrounded at home by his loving family when he joined his Savior Jesus Christ.  Jim is survived by his beloved wife Janet (Hoover) of 57 years; his devoted children Steven Postma, Shelley Postma (Scott Barnard); and Scott Postma (Sara Minnaar) and his loving grandchildren Alexis Sison-Postma, Alex Sison-Postma, Samuel Barnard (Grace Henderson), Paige Barnard, Alex Barnard, Erica Postma and Katie Postma; and his great-grandchildren Jameson Barnard and Wesley Barnard. Jim is also survived by his brother Robert Postma (Virginia) and sisters-in-law Kathy Postma and Janice Postma; and Joe and Carole (Hoover) VanderVeen and many nieces and nephews.

First and foremost, Jim lived a life of fulfillment and joy. He was thoughtful and a kind man of grace who asked for little and gave much; always with a warm presence and unforgettable smile.  Jim graduated from Davenport College and Central Michigan University. He became a Spartan at heart and a tireless supporter of "Go Green" as Jim and Jan raised their family in Okemos for 12 years prior to relocating to Grand Rapids.

Jim launched a 29-year career at Meijer and worked in almost every area of logistics and supply chain before retiring as a senior vice president. He loved the people and the challenges at Meijer and felt a true sense of career accomplishment when he was able to help the company achieve major sustainable improvements in cost structure, while maintaining quality, customer service and price competitiveness. After retirement, Jim served on a variety of industry boards and turned his focus to mentoring young people. "I guess I felt that helping others was one of my greatest accomplishments," said Jim.

Jim had many passions in life that he generously shared with his family and friends. In particular, he and Jan loved traveling with friends.  Jim treasured being on the water boating while sharing special experiences with his grandchildren. He loved to golf and there were even a few birdies along the way!

One standout passion in his retirement years was searching for new, and out-of-the-way restaurants.  He was the "consummate foodie."  He loved to bring people together over food and enjoyed preparing it, much to Jan's delight.  If a man is to be valued by the number of true friends he has on earth, Jim's value would be immeasurable.

Among his many gifts he leaves a legacy of a Godly man; he enjoyed his private times in prayer and reading scripture in his quest to deepen his faith.  It brought Jim much peace in his heart to know that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior.
