On the evening of August 19, 2021, Georgia passed away peacefully in the loving care of her family.
Born in 1937 in Johnstown, PA to John and Constantina (Contakos) Lamonettin, she was the middle sister of 3 daughters. Her parents were Greek immigrants from villages in the Peloponnese.
Georgia grew up in Johnstown and in 1958 married Thomas Gorant in her hometown. They lived in Tom’s hometown of Sharon, PA until a work transfer sent them to Athens, GA for several years. Another work transfer brought the family to West Michigan in 1971.
Georgia was a faithful parishioner at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids, serving many years as the organist, Choir Director and in Philoptochos. She was also a dedicated Daughter of Penelope, serving in several roles including District Governor. In that role, she led a significant fundraising campaign for Special Olympics and volunteered at the International Special Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. Georgia also worked diligently at helping refugees start a home and get established in Grand Rapids. Her outgoing (and, at times, theatrical) personality led her to singing and performing with the Calvin College Oratorio Society and West Michigan Savoyards. Her passions were family, traveling, sewing, swimming, skiing, any social event, and especially, caring for her grandchildren.
Georgia was preceded in death by her father, mother, and older sister, Helen and husband, Tom. She is survived by her children: Linda Saum and her husband Bryan; and Jim Gorant and his wife JoAnne; and grandchildren: Travis Whitaker, Rachel (Whitaker) David and her husband Cameron, Nick Gorant, Alexis Gorant, Mitch Saum and his wife Stephanie, and Madeline Saum. She is also survived by her sister Barbara and 7 nieces and nephews.
A visitation is to be held from 6pm to 8pm Sunday, August 22, with a trisagion at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Grand Rapids; officiated by Rev. Fr. Joshua Pappas. The funeral is to be held at 11am on Monday August 23 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Georgia was a long-time advocate for the youth, so it is fitting that memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Youth Endowment, 330 Lakeside Dr NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
May her memory be eternal Zois Isas!
