Alan James Doerr, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed on September 10, 2020. He was 86.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Annette Doerr; children, David Howard, Julianne Marie Gronowski (Paul), Peter Alan (Lisa); grandchildren, Annabel Doerr, Sophia Doerr, Tabatha Bohlman (Toby), Tara Green; and great grandchildren, DeSean Porter, Benjamin Bohlman, Kayde Jo Bohlman. He was preceded in death by parents Neal and Mary Dommel.
Alan grew up in Freeport, Illinois. After graduating from Bradley University, he enlisted in the Army and spent two years in Augusta, Georgia. He then went into the insurance business in South Bend, Indiana and was shortly thereafter transferred to Kalamazoo, Michigan where his family resided for 18 years. During that time, he was also a teacher for a brief period in Gobles, Michigan. He then returned to the insurance industry and relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1980. He and Annette retired in Ludington, Michigan before relocating back to Grand Rapids seven years ago.
He loved his Lord and faithfully followed Him. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church. He was active in many West Shore Community College plays, the Ludington Mural Society, and Gideons. He loved to spend time outdoors camping, hunting, and fishing; and forever rooting for his Chicago Bears. He also had a passion for clowning and especially loved to bring joy to children.
An outdoor Visitation (1:00pm) and Memorial (2:00pm) are planned for October 22, 2020, at CrossWay Community Church - 3950 Burton Street SE, Grand Rapids. To honor Alan, masks (will be provided) and social distancing will both be required.
