Welcome to the memorial page for

Thomas James Gorant

May 15, 1928 ~ October 10, 2016 (age 88) 88 Years Old

On the evening of October 10, 2016, Tom passed away peacefully in the loving care of his family.  Born in 1928 in Youngstown, OH to James Piero and Demetra (Sotus) Goranitis, he was the oldest of 3 children.  His parents were Greek immigrants from villages near Sparta, and his father proudly fought for the United States in World War I.  Although his childhood coincided with a tough time for our nation, Tom would later recount depression-era stories with particular fondness.  He grew up in Sharon, PA and worked at Sweetland - the Gorant family soda shop and confectionary.  After attending Sharon High School, he graduated from Youngstown State University, then proudly served our nation in the Army during the Korean War.  In 1958, he married Georgia Lamonettin in Johnstown, PA.  He worked his entire career with Westinghouse Furniture Systems.  When transferred to Athens, GA, Tom attended the University of Georgia and graduated with an MBA.  He was a diehard Georgia Bulldog fan and could often be heard exclaiming “how ‘bout them dawgs” on game day.  Another work transfer brought the family to West Michigan in 1971.  Tom was a faithful parishioner at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids, serving many years as Parish Council Treasurer.  He was also a dedicated Mason (achieving his 32nd degree), Shriner, Past President of AHEPA, longtime member of the American Legion Post 356, and Junior Achievement Advisor.  His passions were his family, fishing, old westerns, ice cream (especially with grandkids), penny poker and civil war history.  Tom was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, George.  Tom is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Georgia and their children: Linda Saum and her husband Bryan; and Jim Gorant and his wife JoAnne; and grandchildren: Travis Whitaker, Rachel (Whitaker) David and her husband Cameron, Nick Gorant, Alexis Gorant, Mitch Saum and Madeline Saum.  He is also survived by his brother Tim and 7 nieces and nephews.  A visitation is to be held from 6pm to 9pm Thursday, October 13, with a trisagion at 7:30pm at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Grand Rapids; officiated by Rev. Fr. James Berends.  The funeral is to be held at 11am on Friday October 14 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.  Tom was a long-time advocate for the youth, so it is fitting that memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Youth Endowment, 330 Lakeside Dr NE, Grand Rapids, MI  49503; or the Scottish Rite Children’s Learning Center, 233 East Fulton St., Grand Rapids, MI  49503.

May his memory be eternal Zois Isas!
