He graduated in 1958 from Michigan State University, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. He was an avid fan of football, hockey, and basketball at MSU and attended almost every home game for over 30 years.
After college, he served in the U.S. Army, followed by six years as an Army reservist. He worked alongside his father, Martin C., at the family owned Richards Plumbing and Heating Supply in Grand Rapids, which he continued to operate after his fathers death. He expanded the business with operations in Kalamazoo and Holland, and was recognized by the Mayor of Grand Rapids for 50 years of service to the Grand Rapids business community. He also served as a board member of the American Supply Association, as well as a board member of the Omni network.
In 1940 his parents built a cottage on Baptist Lake, where he swam, fished and boated, spending carefree summers on the back roads of Newaygo County. He wound up living in the scenic waterside retreat entertaining family and friends for many years. An avid tennis player himself, Tom mixed his love for travel with his sport and made trips The Wimbledon Championships in London, as well as the US Open in New York. He spoke of both trips often with friends. He also attended many MSU bowl games, final fours, and hockey tournaments. Community contributions included service on the Child Guidance Board, and over 50 years as head usher at Mayflower Congregational Church. He also served on its board of trustees and other committees.
He is survived by his sons Steven (Laurel) and Randy (Susie): sister, Marge Potter (Paul): grandchildren Lindsey Wendland (Andrew) , Daniel Evert, Carrie Evert, and Josie Evert: sister-in-law Liz Anderson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
