Mary L. Spreng, age 91, of Grand Rapids Township, passed away on February 12, 2018. She was born June 30, 1926, in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Edison and Elizabeth Lutz. After graduating from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, she married, on October 14, 1950, Jarvis L. Spreng, who survives. After spending 50 years in Naperville, she became a resident of the Grand Rapids area in 2000, where she and her husband have been residents of Cook Valley Estates and Porter Hills Village. She is survived by her husband of 67 years and a son, Dr. Richard A Spreng of Okemos, Michigan, a daughter, Anne Elizabeth Spreng of Bellingham, Washington, another daughter, Judith Kay Spreng, also of Bellingham, a son-in law, James Szejda and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Smolenski Spreng. Her eldest daughter, Marilyn Spreng Szejda, passed away in 2010. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In her early married days, Mary was employed by The Northern Trust Company in Chicago and then later in the financial aid office of North Central College. Mary was a member of the Naperville Women’s Club and was active in church and school activities, Girl Scouts and Pioneer Girls. She much appreciated the care and support she received this past year at Porter Hills Village. Contributions to her memory may be made to the Grand Rapids Community Foundation or Porter Hills Foundation. A memorial service will be held at Thornapple Covenant Church, 6595 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 10:30 AM.
