Eleanor "Terry" Burke

Eleanor Hunt Burke “Terry” passed away on September 25, 2016 in Bellaire, MI.  She was born July 11, 1934 in Grand Rapids  the daughter of Irving and Eleanor Burke.  Terry graduated from East Grand Rapids High School, attended Wellesley College, received a BA degree from the University of Michigan and a MA degree from Columbia Teachers College in NYC. She was a guidance counselor for 13 years at the Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ followed by 17 years with the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in Oak Bluffs, MA.  After retiring in 1993 Terry was an active volunteer with the M.V. Chamber Music Society and the M.V. Community Service Board.  She was a member of the Harvard Institute For Learning in Retirement and the Federated Church in Edgartown, MA.  She loved books, traveling and her life long friends, most especially Hilary Snell.  She is survived by her sister, Betsy Burke Peterson, her nieces Michele (John) Berres and Kelly Peterson and her nephew James (Joanna) Peterson.

The family is grateful to the wonderful caregivers at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility and Heartland Hospice.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service at 2:00pm.  Memorial contributions may be made in Terry’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
